Ilic said that these funds will be used above all for resolving the housing needs of the most disadvantaged citizens, including displaced persons, Roma, invalids, single mothers and parentless children.
The Minister said that the Serbian government is preparing a Law on social housing, which should contribute to faster resolution of housing problems of the most disadvantaged citizens in Serbia.
Serbian Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Policy Slobodan Lalovic said that the realisation of the social housing project is necessary for successful implementation of the poverty reduction strategy and the social care system development strategy, which are being prepared by the Serbian government.
Lalovic said that the social housing project is the only chance for many low-income citizens to get a home and that the national conference on housing policy should help all those in Serbia who have not been able to resolve their housing problem for a long time.
Belgrade Mayor Nenad Bogdanovic said there are between 40,000 and 50,000 families in the capital living in shacks and unhygienic accommodation who "cannot possibly solve their housing issues, not even with the help of any technology known to man".
To solve this problem, the state must make enormous efforts, as well as international institutions, he said adding that for local self-governments to take part in this, it is necessary to conduct decentralisation of the state.
The two-day conference is organised by the Ministry of Capital Investment, in cooperation with the UN-Habitat organisation and the support of the Italian government.
The conference will include four major topics, that have been presented as key aspects of the new housing policy, and these are "Social Accommodation – Housing Available to Everyone", " Improvement of Informal Residential Areas", "How to Make the Housing Market Function?" and "Housing Blocks Management and Maintenance".
The conference aims to initiate the essential routes in defining the future national housing policy and to open the dialogue and start active participation of all key players in Serbia's housing sector.
