Following the signing ceremony, Director of the Serbian Privatisation Agency Branko Pavlovic said that employees know their company best. Therefore, it is necessary that trade unions of companies which are to be sold give their opinion of the privatisation programme, legal documentation and debtor-creditor relations.
Pavlovic said that cooperation between the Agency and trade unions will contribute to more accurate assessment of a company's value, which was often reduced by the directors.
He added that the Agency will suggest to the Serbian government to include trade union representatives into tender commissions.
Pavlovic said that knowledge which exists in the companies that were or will be privatised is not used sufficiently. He added that it is a mistake not to restructure public companies, because they hold 80 percent of Serbia's economic potential.
President of the Nezavisnost Trade Union Confederation Branislav Canak said that employees will not make obstacles to privatisation. He said that today's agreement marks democratisation of the privatisation process, and that employees will help increase their company's production after the sale, and create better working conditions for themselves.
President of the Association of Independent Trade Unions of Serbia Milenko Smiljanic said that it is impossible to protect worker rights without such agreements and institutionalised cooperation. He explained that this agreement will increase the quality of the privatisation process, and mitigate contradictions and problems that occur.
He said that out of 420,000 workers who were employed in 1,000 companies that have been privatised so far, 120,000 workers were laid off, of which 50,000 are trying to defend their rights through court proceedings.
