Minister of European Integration Nemanja Starović toured during the May Day holidays the works on the reconstruction of the Water Tower within the Old Town complex in Užice, for which the European Union has allocated €346,698.
Starović noted that the restoration of the tower is one of good examples of how the EU contributes to the preservation of Serbia’s cultural heritage, but also to the development of Serbia’s tourism potential.
We do not necessarily have to love the European Union or support all the policies of its members, but it is necessary, even fair to recognise that it is Serbia’s largest donor, with whose support over 1,500 projects have been implemented for which EU taxpayers have allocated €4 billion, Starović said.
He expressed his firm belief that EU accession represents Serbia’s national interest, adding that he intends to present this to the public in a well-argued manner and without excessive emotion in the coming period.
Starović also visited Sirmium in Sremska Mitrovica, one of the most important archaeological sites not only in Serbia, but also in Europe.
With the financial support of the EU, several projects have been implemented here that contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage, the development of tourism and the economic empowerment of Srem. Through cross-border cooperation with Bosnia and Herzegovina alone, the EU has allocated more than €328,000 for the Roman Emperors Route project.
The European Union’s assistance is not only visible in the renovated façades and infrastructure, but also in improving the quality of life, preserving cultural identity and promoting tourism, the Minister emphasised.
He highlighted the Sirmium site as a prime example of how, with EU support, resources of immeasurable value to Serbia can be revitalised and promoted.
