At yesterday's session of the parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security, whose members unanimously adopted the ministry's report for the stated period, Jocic said that new Police Director Milorad Veljovic is responsible for a reorganisation of crime police and successful fight against organised crime.
Jocic specified that from December to May, nine drug smuggling routes were cut off and 460 kilos of narcotics seized, out of which 233 kilos were heroin.
He stated that the fight against human trafficking was successfully continued and several of these smuggling routes also cut off. The majority of illegal emigrants were of Albanian nationality, around 230 of them, he added.
Also, 1,633 criminal acts were uncovered in this period, which is a remarkable result, said Jocic and specified that the number of most serious crimes, such as murders, serious injuries and robberies, was reduced and a high level of crime solving achieved.
According to Jocic, during the past three years, compared to the previous three-year period from 2000 to 2003, murders connected to organised crime and those within groups of organised criminals were halved.
During the former period, 31 murders were committed, while within the past three years there were 15 such murders.
He pointed out that noticeable results were achieved in the prevention of serious corporate crime, as well as in the area of “sophisticated crime” related to author rights and software piracy.
Jocic recalled that during the last three years, police confiscated approximately 90,000 cartons of various brands of cigarettes, some 100 tonnes of oil derivates, 33 tonnes of coffee, and 27,000 litres of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
He said that on the territory of Vojvodina the number of interethnic incidents was reduced, as well as the number of fatal traffic accidents.
The Minister stressed that significant results were achieved in the area of interstate cooperation, not just in theory but also in a practical sense.
