In this way, with assistance from the European Commission Serbia wants to take over the role of regional coordinator in this important and future-oriented domain which would be of extreme significance for overall sustainable development not just for Serbia but to other countries of the region as well, the Ministry of Energy and Mining said in a statement.
Naumov will inform EU officials on Serbia’s activities in ratifying the agreement on establishing the Energy Community of South East Europe (ECSEE) together with other Balkan countries, signed in October 2005 in Athens.
Special emphasis will be placed on the energy supply safety problems in the region and beyond. The European Commissioner will be told of the need to efficiently solve humanitarian catastrophe problems which have occurred in the last two winters in Kosovo-Metohija as a result of shortages in the supply of electric energy, which particularly targets the Serb population in the province.
This will also be an occasion to stress the importance Serbia attaches to the 150th anniversary of Nikola Tesla’s birth and to express gratitude to Piebalgs for his expressed readiness to attend the ceremonial academy occasioned by this jubilee.
On his two-day visit to Brussels, Naumov will also meet with Secretary General of the Energy Charter Conference André Mernier in order to renew activities on Serbia’s joining the agreement on the Energy Charter and the Protocol on Energy Efficiency and accompanying environmental aspects, which is of importance for developing energy cooperation and creating preconditions for boosting investment in the Serbian energy sector.
After talks with top European Commission officials, Naumov will take part in the Ministerial Meeting of the Energy Community in Luxemburg on June 8, which will focus on existing problems in implementing the agreement on establishing the Energy Community. It is expected that necessary steps in containing the process of setting up the regional energy market and its integration into the EU’s internal energy market will be considered, the statement from the Ministry added.
