Participating in the conference were representatives of line ministries and other institutions in the Republic of Serbia, representatives of the judiciary, the national consumers’ organisation – movement for protection of consumers in Belgrade, representatives of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS), the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) – Intellectual Property Rights Protection, as well as market inspectors from Montenegro and Slovenia.
Participants of the conference exchanged experiences in joint activities and practical use of legislation in the field of consumers’ protection, advertising, protection of intellectual property rights, investigation of criminal acts in corporate crime cases, as well as cases of violations and inspection surveillance.
Activities of the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Services and the Market Inspection Sector were presented at the conference, the Ministry said in a statement adding that the market inspection planned, directed and executed its activities on controlling reform laws with priorities aimed at protecting legal trade and preventing disloyal competition, preventing illegal trade and legalisation of work, protection of consumers’ rights, intellectual rights protection.
A new approach to consumers’ rights protection points to a more active involvement of inspectors in organised training of both consumers and sellers in cooperation with consumers’ organisations, also making use of the experiences from other countries.
The market inspection will consider the demands of the Serbian National Consumers Organisation (NOPS) for establishing consumers’ protection in the field of services and irregular contracts, deceiving adverts, commission sale and other initiatives in order to protect consumers’ rights.
The draft law on efficient protection of intellectual property rights will be a good basis for removing forged goods from the market after confiscation as it will allow for destruction of forged products.
The market inspection has achieved good results in controlling the application of the law in the field of quality and safety of products, and it is evident that the level of products’ quality has been upgraded.
Prevention of gray economy in the field of trade and services is a continued activity of the Market Inspection Sector, which will continue to cooperate with the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Finance (Customs Administration, Tax Administration and Tobacco Administration) as well as with other authorised inspection services.
Local authorities are also expected to join the control of sale of goods on the street and public areas as these will be their entrusted duties after the law regulating the sale of goods is amended and after the new law on trade is adopted.
Cooperation with market inspectors from Montenegro, Slovenia and authorised inspectors from neighbouring countries is crucial for efficient inspection surveillance, the statement concluded.
