Serbian Deputy Minister of Health Dragomir Marisavljevic has said that the mortality rates of infants and children under five years of age in Serbia-Montenegro halved between 1992 and 2002, but he warned that cardiovascular diseases have become the cause of more than 50 percent of deaths in the country.
Marisavljevic said at the presentation of the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s global report for 2003 that malign diseases are the second most frequent cause of death in Serbia-Montenegro and warned of the growing presence of other non-contagious diseases.
Marisavljevic added that some 35 percent of deaths are linked to smoking and he announced that the ministry will step up its cooperation with the WHO, particularly in health system reforms and disease prevention.
Head of the WHO Belgrade Mission Luigi Migliorini said the publishing of the WHO global report for 2003 marks a new stage in the WHO’s efforts to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals, of which six are related to health.
