Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Serbian Patriarch Pavle, senior officials of the Polish and Czech Orthodox churches Metropolitan Sava and Metropolitan Nikolaj, and archbishops and metropolitans of the Russian, Jerusalem, Alexandrian, Georgian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Albanian and Cypriot Orthodox churches.

Kostunica thanked Patriarch Bartholomew and all the guests who lent solemnity to the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising and the foundation of modern Serbian state.
The focus of the meeting was the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, where Serbs are deprived of their right to life. The participants in the meeting unanimously agreed that it is necessary to immediately start the return of the internally displaced persons, and begin with the reconstruction of Serbian houses, monasteries and churches that have been destroyed or damaged in the past four years.
The Serbian people has never lived in such difficult circumstances in Kosovo-Metohija. Even the monasteries, which were not destroyed during the Turkish Ottoman rule, are being attacked and torched in Kosovo-Metohija today.
Kostunica emphasised the importance of Christian values as universal principles, which are the foundation of our civilisation and a reliable moral support of society.
The Prime Minister said that the building of dialogue and trust among different religious communities in southeastern Europe is one of the key steps in the achievement of lasting peace and stability in the region.
