Minister of the Interior Bratislav Gasic and European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson today visited the joint patrols of the Serbian Border Police and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) at the Horgos border crossing.
On this occasion, they assessed that the cooperation between Frontex and the Serbian police, which resulted in good results in suppressing irregular migration, is at an exceptional level.
Gasic stated that since the beginning of the year, 881 illegal border crossings were prevented along the border with Hungary, while this number, in the same period last year, was 172, and he emphasised that Serbia will continue with the process of harmonisation with the EU visa policy.
He pointed out that Serbia has shown that it is a reliable partner in the fight against illegal migration and the fight against cross-border crime.
According to him, no country can deal with the migrant crisis alone and therefore it is necessary for all the countries along the migrant route to continue to cooperate and work together.
Johansson underlined that the EU is committed to strengthening the partnership with Serbia, especially in the area of effective border management, while praising our country for what it has done in recent months in terms of harmonising visa policy with the policy of the Union, which has led to a significant reduction in irregular migration in the EU.
According to her, the engagement of members of Frontex on the territory of Serbia is a practical indicator of the European Union's commitment to cooperation with Serbia.
