Selakovic underlined that Serbia will respond to such a move of Pristina with all diplomatic means available.
The request for membership is a political goal for Pristina, not a value commitment and is an attempt at abusing this organisation. That is in deep contrast with the norms and rules of the Council of Europe, other international organisations and the international law. In addition, this is just another clear indicator that Pristina has no intentions of reaching any solution through dialogue, but it has opted for a unilateral approach for the nth time, Selakovic underlined.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Serbia’s foreign policy is based on the principles of respect for international law, territorial integrity and political independence of states and warned that Pristina’s request for membership in the Council of Europe represents a gross violation of territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia.
Selakovic stated that Serbia supports every engagement of the Council of Europe in Kosovo and Metohija which aims at improving standards in the field of human rights, the rule of law and democracy, and which is in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and the status neutral approach of the Council of Europe.
The Republic of Serbia believes that the values of the Council of Europe are a basis for preserving stability and prosperity in Europe and stands for them. In our region we continue to contribute to stability and the promotion of principles and values of the Council of Europe. That is an important part of our path towards membership in the European Union, to which we are fully dedicated, and on which we also base the protection of our national interests, Selakovic concluded.
