One of the priorities of the Serbian government will be the fight against human trafficking in the region, Serbian Minister of Interior Dragan Jocic said today, opening the 6th conference of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe on child trafficking.

Minister Jocic said that the government wants to establish the rule of law in Serbia and therefore the fight against human trafficking must be high on its priority list. He explained that that kind of crime is very dangerous for the state because channels for trafficking in people are also used for smuggling of drugs and arms. Serbia has made significant progress in the tackling of that issue, but that is one of the problems that has never been completely resolved.

Chairman of the Stability Pact's Task Force for the Fight Against Child Trafficking Helga Konrad said that the increase in the number of victims of child trafficking is characteristic for post-conflict areas, poor countries and states with strong organised crime networks.
Konrad said that the Stability Pact has good cooperation with the governments of Serbia and Montenegro in the combat against child trafficking, and urged governments of all states to form national task forces that would deal with that issue.
Representatives of similar working groups from Albania, Macedonia and Romania also spoke at the conference, as well as members of international non-governmental humanitarian organisations.
