Minister of the Interior Aleksandar Vulin visited today members of the Sector for Emergency Situations who are struggling, together with their colleagues, at the Greek island of Evia to put out wildfires that are raging on this island.
Vulin stated that the catastrophic wildfires on the island of Evia would have had much more severe consequences had it not been for the Serbian firefighters.
He explained that our firefighters defended a fire line which is longer than three kilometres continuously for 24 hours. Behind that line are vast forests, several villages and small towns that would have burned down and disappeared in the raging fires had it not been for the Serbian firefighters holding the position.
According to the Minister, the training and the level of equipment of Serbian firefighters have always inspired awe among their colleagues, but the courage, persistence and dedication that they have demonstrated while protecting lives and property of the inhabitants of Evia have caused great and deserved gratitude of the entire Greek people.
Acting Head of the Sector for Emergency Situations Luka Causic said that the situation on the island of Evia is relatively calm and underlined that owing to the skills and courage of our people, a great portion of forests and villages on the part of the island where they operated have been saved.
Mayor of the Greek Fire Department Georgios Astrinakis, who is the contact point for the Serbian team, said that the cooperation with the Serbian firefighters was successful and yielded good results.
The Serbian Ministry of the Interior also sent to Evia a medical team of the Department for the Workplace Safety and Health, consisting of three doctors, a medical technician and an ambulance.
