Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated today at an online panel of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) that the Serbian economy is recovering very quickly this year from the consequences of the crisis caused by coronavirus.
At the panel "Building a better and more equal future: Voices of the EBRD region", dedicated to the consequences of the pandemic, Brnabic pointed out that the growth of Serbia's GDP in 2021 will be at least six percent.
The Prime Minister stated that our country recorded a GDP growth of 1.7 percent in the first quarter of 2021, which is currently the best result in Europe.
She recalled that she has been Prime Minister since 2017, as well as that in 2016, when she was Minister of Public Administration, the transformation of the Serbian economy began, from an economy based on labour-intensive jobs and investments to an economy based on innovations and knowledge.
That helped us a lot when the crisis set in, since our economy became much more stable and resilient, Brnabic explained, emphasising that Serbia was affected by the crisis, but not as much as most European Union countries.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the Serbian economy has shown great resilience when it comes to the services and IT sector, noting that the state has responded very effectively to the challenges during the covid crisis, with so far a total of three packages of assistance to the economy and citizens. worth approximately €8 billion, which is more than 17 percent of our GDP.
Brnabic underlined that that meant support, not only for small and medium but also large companies, as well as direct financial assistance to citizens.
She pointed out that in 2020 Serbia's GDP fell by only 0.9 percent, which was the second best result in Europe.
This helped us a lot to have a quick recovery in the first quarter of this year and we hope that in 2021 we will have a GDP growth of at least six percent, said the Prime Minister, saying that the fight against COVID-19 is still ongoing and that no one can declare victory yet.
