Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated today that she is proud of how Serbia is fighting coronavirus and underlined that vaccination is still the most important topic and a question of national security.
Speaking at the panel discussion “A Year of Changes – Health, Pandemic, Lessons Learned”, organised by the company Hemofarm, Brnabic underlined that it is necessary that as many citizens as possible, especially the young, get vaccinated in order to reach heard immunity and go back to normal life.
The Prime Minister stated the fact that there are only 17 percent of those vaccinated in the age group below 30 and underlined that vaccination is also a question of civic duty and social responsibility because it is a fact that those who are vaccinated protect all those who are not.
Brnabic said that in 37 local self-governments more than 50 percent of the population is vaccinated, but the problem is that in 15 local self-governments there are less than 30 percent of those vaccinated.
She added that over 70 percent of the elderly are vaccinated, which will surely contribute to a smaller impact on the health system, but she also warned that young people also end up in hospitals.
Brnabic said that during the pandemic, hard work has been done to find the right answer to this crisis, emphasising that a survey in 15 European countries concerning the attitude of citizens towards coronavirus and the health system, showed that the trust of Serbian citizens in the health system has increased 12 percent.
Today, we are absolutely more prepared, which applies to all health systems, she said, adding that no one in the world was ready for a pandemic and no one knew what we were facing and what we could expect.
Minister of Health Zlatibor Loncar warned that, if we continue with relaxed behaviour and refuse to get the vaccine which will lead us to herd immunity, we can expect a worsening of the situation regarding the coronavirus in a few weeks.
Loncar called on everyone once more, especially the young, to get vaccinated in order to reach herd immunity.
I would like that we enter autumn with relaxed measures, but given the current behaviour and a low vaccination turnout, that is highly questionable, Loncar said and added that the citizens focus only on the number of new cases of coronavirus, which is irresponsible because there are other indicators that the situation is worsening, such as the increased number of hospitalisations.
