The exercise, named “Gate”, was organised by invitation of the US embassy. Members of the Special Anti-terrorist Unit and the Anti-terrorist Unit of the Serbian Ministry of Interior Affairs along with those of the US security service took part in the exercise.
In the first phase of the exercise, an eight member terrorist group forced entry into the embassy, which is situated on Knez Milos Street, and being unable to penetrate the inner building, it took visa applicants in the consul section as hostages.
The hostage rescue operation was promptly begun by two anti-terrorist teams and later an explosive device that was seized from the mock-terrorists was deactivated in front of the embassy.
At the time of the exercise, Serbian Minister of Interior Affairs Dragan Jocic, US Ambassador Micheal Polt and other foreign diplomats were present in the embassy building, as well as representatives of US companies doing business in Serbia.
Knez Milos Street was closed to traffic for an hour and at the end of the simulation, members of the US security service apologised to the public for the traffic blockade and expressed satisfaction at the successfully executed exercise.
