At the conference dedicated to diabetes prevention, organised by the Serbian Ministry of Health and the Serbian Expert Commission for Diabetes, it was pointed out that the Guide to Good Clinical Practice for Diabetes was prepared in September 2002, in cooperation with the European Agency for Reconstruction. Last year, €300,000 were used from the budget for the purchase of 50 machines for early detection and tracking of the disease.
During 2003, the treatment with pen-insulin was introduced, and the pharmaceutical company Novo-Nordisk, which won at the tender for the purchase of pen-insulin, assisted in the preparation of the National Register of Diabetes Patients, and organised two workshops for education of doctors.
In addition, 2,000 machines for measuring level of sugar in the blood of children with diabetes, patients with new complications and pregnant women were purchased through a donation. The value of the machines and additional medical supplies for six months totals €200,000.
Participants in the conference also presented a plan of future activities, which include preventive measures such as early detection of the diseases, reducing of obesity and increasing physical activity.
