Addressing an international seminar on investing in the Serbian Internet and IT sector, organised by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank, Ilic said that the government will liberalize the telecommunications market to improve the quality of telecom services and make them less expensive.
The Ministry is due to draw up a telecommunications development strategy, said Deputy Minister of Capital Investment Bogoljub Lazic, adding that the strategy will be based on market liberalization as well as development of fixed telephony, interconnection services and 3G mobile telephony.
The Ministry has also set up a team to bring the Law on telecommunications up to European Union standards, Lazic went on to say and announced the setting up of a telecommunications agency.
He also said that the state will sell its stake in mobile provider Mobtel by early May and noted that Serbia-Montenegro will establish a bureau of telecommunications for postal traffic in the state union.
According to IFC’s Andi Dervishi, the corporation offers Serbia a long-term strategic partnership for the development of global and regional business.
Giovanni Maruzzeli, who prepared a study on investing in Serbia’s Internet and IT sector, described the local market as interesting, stressing that the telecommunications sector has recorded a rapid growth despite difficult market conditions in the past 15 years.
Serbia’s business sector is growing rapidly and the banking sector is ready to support prospective deals, Maruzzeli added.
The study, whose preparation IFC financed with $130,000, aims to attract foreign investors into the Serbian IT sector.
