As part of a Serbian government delegation’s
visit to Washington for the annual spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, Labus met with US Deputy Treasury Secretary Samuel Bodman, Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs Alan Larson, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Marc Grossman and Deputy National Security Advisor Steve Hadley.
The meetings focused on economic and political issues, the Tanjug news agency quoted Labus as saying, adding that the US administration is ready to help Serbia continue reforms and achieve progress.
The talks also touched on bilateral relations between Serbia-Montenegro and the US, regional stability and the Kosovo-Metohija crisis, the Deputy Prime Minister said.
Participants in the meetings agreed that the situation the province calls for a dialogue that will pave the way for a political solution to the problems, ensure safety for all residents of Kosovo-Metohija and create conditions for the return of displaced persons. According to Labus, a political solution must ensure that there is no repeat of the March 17-18 events in the province.
The Serbian government delegation, also comprising Minister of Finance Mladjan Dinkic, Minister of International Economic Relations Predrag Bubalo and National Bank of Serbia Governor Radovan Jelasic, is due to meet with officials of the World Bank and the IMF.
Over the next two to three weeks, Serbia will meet the World Bank requirements, Labus went on to say, and explained that the government has already forwarded a set of economic and other bills for parliament approval.
The Serbian officials are also scheduled to hold talks with IMF representatives to discuss measures to reduce the country’s budget deficit, he added.
