Jocic said that the crime lab is part of the complete police reform process in Serbia and the endeavour to improve the work of police in line with European standards.
The minister pointed out that Serbia must not lag behind in its crime lab equipment and in the investigation of the most severe criminal acts in a time of modern technology.
The equipping of the crime lab was financed by the Norwegian government with about €640,000, and Ambassador of Norway to Serbia-Montenegro Hans Ola Urstad attended the event, along with Niels Beckman, who heads up the law enforcement department of the OSCE Mission to Serbia-Montenegro.
Jocic said that the international cooperation with respect to solving the most severe criminal acts, such as organised crime, trafficking and so on, must be standardised.
He expressed gratitude to OSCE representatives and to the Norwegian government’s representatives, and recalled the large Norwegian assistance to Serbia in various fields.
The minister recalled that crime labs have also been opened in both Belgrade and Novi Sad, and that the exchange of information with the Nis centre will considerably improve the whole police reform and the work of police in Serbia.
The Norwegian Ambassador said that the cooperation between police in Norway and in Serbia is rated highly, stressing the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of training personnel in Nis for work in the centre alongside not only Norwegian police officers, but also police officers from Sweden and the Netherlands.
OSCE Mission to Serbia-Montenegro representative Niels Beckman spoke about this organisation’s endeavours to provide all necessary conditions for improving the Serbian Ministry of Interior’s capacities in the fight against criminal activities.
Beckman said that one of the basic conditions needed for objective court proceedings is the provision of hard material evidence, and added that the crime lab’s equipment will be used for analysing narcotics, for ballistic and biological examinations, for finger print analysis, inspection of documents, examining traces and other similar investigative procedures.
