Brnabic pointed out that a full membership in the EU remains one of the key foreign policy priorities of the new government, and that on the way to that goal, Serbia continues to work on the implementation of comprehensive reforms, especially in the area of the rule of law.
Since the start of its mandate, the new government of Serbia has already made several important reform steps in this area, the Prime Minister pointed out, citing the adoption of the Media Strategy Action Plan, the establishment of a working group for the safety of journalists, and the establishment of a working group to improve the electoral environment, which will be inclusive and include a wide range of civil society organisations.
Von der Leyen welcomed the measures taken by the government of Serbia and pointed out that they represent steps in the right direction. She assessed that the application of the new methodology, which Serbia has accepted, will speed up the accession process, and reiterated that the EC is ready to work intensively on that matter.
The interlocutors agreed that the situation with the COVID-19 epidemic is very complex, but that the measures taken will yield results, assessing that the discipline of people in adhering to the measures is necessary until a sufficient amount of vaccines is provided for everyone.
Von der Leyen underlined that Serbia will have access to vaccines, once they are officially authorised, through cooperation with the EU.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the EU and the European Commission on the assistance and support to Serbia during the pandemic.
The meeting was also attended by Minister for European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic.
