In his speech, Milosavljevic recalled that cardiovascular diseases are the commonest cause of death in Serbia and the world, and made a strong plea for responsible behaviour when it comes to health.
We here wish to join thousands of people throughout the world who are aware that health is our greatest treasure, and that we can protect our heart only if we behave in a responsible way, the Minister said.
US Ambassador to Serbia-Montenegro Michael Polt stressed that we fight cardiovascular diseases by treating them, but it is incomparably better if we manage to prevent their occurrence.
This is why we should stop smoking, try to keep the blood pressure under control, reduce and control the level of fat in the blood, as well as do a lot of exercise, said Polt.
After the opening ceremony, several thousands of citizens who came to Ada took part in the walk around the Savsko Lake, while the elderly ones could have their health, blood pressure and cholesterol checked at “health fair” stalls, as well as get information about the risk factors that lead to cardiovascular diseases.
The celebration included a football match between the Serbian government and the diplomatic corps. The whole event was organised by the Serbian Ministry of Health in cooperation with the US Embassy in Belgrade.
Participants of the “Healthy Heart” race were also Ambassador Michael Polt, Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic and basketball ace Vlade Divac.
