Minister for European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic stated in Berlin today that Germany is committed to the EU enlargement policy and to the European future of Serbia and the region.
Joksimovic, who is on a two-day working visit to Germany, said after meeting with Minister of State for European Affairs at the German Foreign Ministry Michael Roth that Serbia is recognised as a country with the first-class capacities that the EU counts the most on in the Western Balkan region.
She said that she told Roth that Serbia wants to become an EU member state and that it has the capacities that can be beneficial to the Union, and that membership can bring a lot to Serbian citizens too.
However, Serbia needs partners for this hard and demanding mission and also that the EU start talking unanimously regarding the enlargement policy.
According to Joksimovic, the perspective undoubtedly exists, but it is to be seen whether the EU will understand that enlargement policy is its best tool for empowerment and its strategic sovereignty.
The Minister pointed out that Germany is a consistent partner to Serbia on its European path and that this country has invested over €1.7 billion in grants and support to reforms in Serbia.
She stressed that Germany is also one of the most important member states of the EU, which, alongside France, is the engine of the Union's development, especially after Brexit and the great challenges that lie ahead.
This visit to Berlin is happening at a very important moment, especially after the release of a new EU enlargement methodology, which gives us the option to see if it suits us or we want to stick to the old one, Joksimovic said.
