EU invests €400m for improvement of environment in Serbia

Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic and Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Sem Fabrizi visited Uzice today within the framework of the "Look Around” campaign for environmental protection, on the occasion of the "EU Green Day in Uzice" event.

They visited together with representatives of local authorities the Duboko regional landfill, whose start of equipment was financed by the EU.

Joksimovic noted that Serbia, as a candidate for admission to the EU, receives €200 million annually from EU funds, and added that it was decided to allocate €6 million for the continuation of this project, as the landfill is being filled rapidly.

Fabrizi pointed out that the European Union has given more than €400 million to Serbia for the improvement of the environment.

We will soon start a new project - the construction of a sewage system for the rainwater in Krcagovo, a local community next to Uzice. This project will bring improvement to people and employees in the industrial zone, who make up for 50 percent of all employed people in Uzice, Fabrizi said.

He recalled that the announced project in Krcagovo is part of the EU PRO programme, which provides funding to municipalities that want to improve the sustainability of their places and the lives of their citizens.

Joksimovic and Fabrizi also visited the Innovative Centre for Collection and Recycling of Textile "Reteks", which is a project of the Women's Centre of Uzice.

This is a project implemented by the local self-government within the cross-border projects of Serbia and Montenegro, Uzice and Niksic, which in 2015 was financed with €172,500.

The "Look Around" campaign, conducted by the Ministry of European Integration and the Delegation of the European Union in Serbia, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, aims to motivate the citizens to, together with the competent institutions, to improve the state of the environment in Serbia.
