Belgrade, July 11, 2005- Serbia-Montenegrin Minister of International Economic Relations Predrag Ivanovic and Japanese Ambassador to Serbia-Montenegro Ryuichi Tanabe signed a document today on a Japanese donation worth $6.7 million for the modernisation of the water-supply in Belgrade.
Ambassador Tanabe afterwards stated that the quality of water is of essential importance for the life and health of all citizens and added that Japan has already provided professional equipment and sent four experts, given the importance of technology transfer.
According to him, the project should resolve the water supply problems in some parts of the city, enhance the water supply system’s capacity, and ensure the supervision of the quality of water.
Tanabe reiterated the Japanese government’s readiness to continue to support the modernisation of Belgrade’s water supply system in the coming years.
Ivanovic recalled that the Japanese government has so far donated a total of $190 million for Serbia’s environmental protection, infrastructure, health, and social protection as well as buses for Belgrade’s urban transport. Japan also donated equipment to four clinical centres in Serbia and to the hydroelectric power plant in Bajina Basta.
