On behalf of the EIB Deputy Director General, the agreement was signed by Romualdo Massa Bernucci, who said that the loan will help Serbia-Montenegro improve its flight control system and harmonise it with European standards. He stressed that the EIB is active in many fields and sectors in the country and announced that there will be more loans for development of infrastructure and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Serbian Minister of Finance Mladjan Dinkic, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Serbian government, thanked the EIB and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for their support in the project improving flight control with a total of around €70 million.
Dinkic recalled that early this year the EBRD approved a €33.5 million loan to Serbia-Montenegro for this purpose, the EIB set aside €34 million, and the Serbia-Montenegrin Flight Control Agency gave €22.5 million. The total financial support for this project exceeds €90 million.
Dinkic voiced hope that the EIB will also support a project modernising the Serbian railway and assist in the calling of an international tender for construction of a highway on Corridor 10 running through Serbia, as well as support for the construction of the Belgrade-Pozega highway.
Montenegrin Minister of Finance Igor Luksic said that the EIB loan will increase safety in Serbia-Montenegro's air space. He pointed out that the improvement of the flight control system is necessary so that it can become part of the European system.
On behalf of Serbia-Montenegro, the agreement was signed by Minister of Internal Economic Relations Amir Nurkovic, and Nikola Stankov on behalf of the Flight Control Agency.
