Paunovic said that with the adoption of the Strategy of prevention and protection from discrimination and of the accompanying action plan, Serbia opted for the systematic development of an institutional and legislative framework, as well as of mechanisms to combat discrimination.
According to her, an indicator of the determination of the Serbian government to continue in the right direction is the establishment of the Council for monitoring the implementation of recommendations of UN mechanisms for human rights, which aims to regulate in a systematic way all important issues in the system of implementation of policies relating to human and minority rights.
She stressed that the work of the Council is important for reporting and communication with the UN in the process of the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations and the recommendations of United Nations treaty bodies, as well as for the negotiation process with the EU, especially for chapters 23 and 24, but its primary task is to improve the human rights situation in Serbia.
The Director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights has stressed that the Republic of Serbia submits regular reports to the UN bodies and receives recommendations from them to improve respect for human and minority rights and in this moment Serbia has 367 recommendations that were made to her by UN mechanisms for human rights.
Paunovic said that the Serbian Government has accepted the recommendation by the UN Human Rights Council made after a periodic review of the situation, referring to the establishment of a mechanism for monitoring the recommendations of the UN.
In this regard, the Office for Human and Minority Rights, in cooperation with relevant ministries and with the support of the UN in Serbia, has defined models for the monitoring of human rights, she added.
Paunovic assessed that Serbia needs a mechanism that will enable that all laws and policies in the field of human rights fully implemented and that all institutional capacities which are at our disposal be fully used.
Cahn praised the establishment of the Council for monitoring the implementation of recommendations of UN mechanisms for human rights, as a body that will contribute to the improvement of the process of inter-sectoral cooperation and communication with the United Nations in the reporting process.
