A statement by the Ministry of Justice says that during the meeting, the Minister of Justice and the Human Rights Commissioner discussed the situation in Serbian prisons and the strengthening of the system of alternative sanctions.
Selakovic pointed out that the system of alternative sanctions is beginning to show results in terms of reducing the prison population, which thus creates better conditions for re-socialisation of prisoners, and that Serbia is the leader in the region in the application of alternative sanctions.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Justice pays special attention to the improvement of prison infrastructure, thus improving the accommodation capacities and conditions for prisoners.
Selakovic and Muiznieks discussed the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights and agreed that the execution of these judgments is of great importance for improving human rights and the judicial system.
The Minister of Justice pointed out that Serbia after many years managed to reduce the number of complaints filed by citizens of Serbia to the European Court of Human Rights and that this number in 2012 amounted to over 11,000 complaints, whereas today it is 2,400.
The two officials agreed that these meetings are important for the exchange of opinions and the strengthening of cooperation in the field of human rights in Serbia, it is added in the statement.
