Giving a solemn speech at the Foundation of Ilija M. Kolarac on the occasion of the International Day against Fascism and Anti-Semitism, Dacic underlined that the memory serves us so that we would never forget history and that it would never repeat, and that the Holocaust was the greatest defeat of the mankind in its history.
The memory of innocent victims of the Holocaust, the protection of the sites of suffering and the acquisition of new knowledge about that atrocious debasement of human nature is not only our obligation to each victim, but also one of the basic preconditions for creating a society based on respect for the individual, his rights, freedoms and diversity, Dacic underlined.
He referred to the scary fact that in World War II six million Jews were killed and that their massive killing was organized by Nazi Germany.
The Prime Minister pointed out that 15,000 Jews lived in Serbia prior to the Second World War and that 90% of them did not survive.
From this place I want to send a clear message that young people should be educated in the spirit of non-violence, patriotism, understanding and respect for diversity, Dacic said.
He also pointed out that Serbia's position has always been that every crime has two names - the name of the victim and the villain’s name.
Aware of this, we now express genuine empathy with the incomprehensible suffering of Jewish children who were brutally murdered, Dacic stated and recalled that the official policy of Nazi Germany advocated, among other things, the institutional, state-organized systematic violence against the Jews.
Dacic highlighted that the Serbian government has initiated and implemented a number of programmes in the fields of education, research and remembrance of the Holocaust, considering that to be its civilization and moral obligation.
The Prime Minister said that Serbia is actively participating in the activities of an interstate working group on education, remembrance and research of the Holocaust of which it is a full member.
The International Day against Fascism and Anti-Semitism is being observed on 9 November worldwide, in memory of this day and the "Kristallnacht”, when a large-scale persecution of the Jews in Nazi Germany was carried out in 1938.
