Serbia needs clear signal from Brussels to continue on its European path

Outgoing Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, opened the BELTALKS: Belgrade Economic Talks forum today, stating that Serbia will continue on its European path, but that the country’s citizens need a clear signal from Brussels regarding that process.

I take this opportunity to call on the European Commission and the Member States – it is high time for you to demonstrate the political will for Serbia to be with you, and it would be a strong political gesture if you respected your own recommendations, Macut said in his address to forum participants, which brought together representatives of the business sector, international financial institutions and experts from the region and Europe.

The Prime Minister stressed that Serbia is strongly economically integrated with the EU and will continue on its European path, but that concrete EU support is also needed.

Speaking about the steps taken to improve the economy, the business environment and citizens’ daily lives, he pointed out that Serbia will begin implementing the Roam Like at Home regime in the coming months, that it is fully integrated into the SEPA system and expects disbursements under the Growth Plan.

Macut said that he is dissatisfied that Cluster 3 has still not been opened and that Serbia is once again facing political obstacles which, as he noted, make no sense.

The Prime Minister also stressed that Serbia recorded the fastest economic growth in Europe in the first half of 2026 and that, in uncertain times when supply chains and the global economy as a whole are facing major challenges, the country has managed to preserve stability.

According to him, that is not enough, and it is necessary to work harder and with greater dedication, adapt to new circumstances, keep pace with the development of new technologies and attract new investment.

For that reason, the state has launched highly ambitious projects such as the Serbia 2035 initiative, which defines the most important projects for the country’s economy, and in just a few months Serbia will host Expo 2027, when it will present a different Serbia to the world – a Serbia of the future and innovation, the Prime Minister said.

The country was facing numerous challenges at this time last year, but the state managed to overcome the problems involving universities, our education system is now where it should be, and tensions in society have eased, Macut said, adding that he expects a fair and robust campaign for the upcoming parliamentary elections and that the vote on 25 October will be held in a democratic and peaceful atmosphere.
