Continuation of dialogue on sunflower production, purchase

Prime Minister in a caretaker capacity Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Professor Dragan Glamočić, PhD, and Minister of Internal and Foreign Trade Jagoda Lazarević held a meeting today with representatives of several farmers’ associations and the oilseed processing industry.

The meeting at the Serbian government building was held at the initiative of agricultural producers, with the topics including rising production costs, the ratio between the prices of inputs and agricultural products and the challenges they are currently facing in the sunflower market.

Representatives of some oilseed processors said that they would announce final sunflower purchase prices in the coming days, which were announced to be significantly higher than the current advance price of approximately RSD 40.

The meeting comprehensively addressed the issue of sunflower production and purchase, and it was agreed that the dialogue would continue in the coming days.

Macut stressed that he understands the challenges faced by farmers, particularly the uncertainty caused by major price fluctuations from year to year.

He emphasised that the state cannot dictate market prices, which depend on supply and demand, but that it can and must use the mechanisms at its disposal to help make relations between producers, buyers and processors more stable and predictable.

The Prime Minister also proposed establishing a permanent platform for bringing together producers, buyers and processors and for cooperation among them, potentially using the existing mechanisms of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.

Glamočić described the meeting as productive, noting that discussions between producers and the processing industry are never simple because both sides have their own interests, while the final price is determined by the market.

According to him, this time the discussions were based on arguments, while the participation of the Prime Minister gave the meeting particular significance.

Representatives of farmers’ associations called for greater transparency in the formation of purchase prices at the meeting.
