The signing was attended by Minister of Natural Resources, Mining and Spatial Planning Milan Bacevic, who on this occasion said that the exact amount of investment will be known after the completion of a feasibility study, the creation of which will start in the coming weeks.
Bacevic said that the arrival of the American consortium in northern Kosovo-Metohija significantly improves the position of Serbia in political talks with Pristina.
He pointed out that New Power Generation (NGP) is a powerful consortium in Illinois, and among the strongest consortiums in the United States.
Kathuria said that the consortium is planning to bring new technologies and fully utilise the capacity of Trepca.
He pointed out that the NGP cooperates with the State Department in order to resolve any potential issues and problems related to Trepca.
He said that the signing of the contract with Serbia will be followed by talks with representatives of the interim institutions in Pristina.
According to him, the idea is to make the NGP a public-private partnership for Trepca in which the Serbian government and representatives of the provisional institutions in Pristina will be majority owners, and the goal is for Trepca to become one of the largest mining capacities in the world.
RMHK Trepca exists for more than 85 years and used to employ 25,000 workers. The company is now in restructuring and its legal status is currently not defined.
The combine is divided by the ethnic lines, according to which 65% to 70% is in the southern Albanian part of Mitrovica, and the rest is in the northern, Serbian part of the city.
