Minister of Finance and Economy Mladjan Dinkic called on Serbian Parliament members today to adopt the proposed laws on the ratification of several agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including the agreements on cooperation in defence, agriculture, and mutual encouragement and protection of investments.
Speaking in a general debate on the bills on ratification of a number of international agreements in the Serbian Parliament, Dinkic stressed that the Serbian government is about to conclude various business deals worth one billion dollars, with the contract on agriculture alone being worth half a billion dollars.
In addition to the agreement with the UAE, the Parliament is also examining agreements between the governments of Serbia and Russia on the approval of a state export credit to the Serbian government and on the ratification of the Treaty of Guarantee between Serbia and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (the railway station project “Belgrade Centre” - Phase I)
Dinkic told the press in the Serbian Parliament that a mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will come to Belgrade on 8 May, adding that one of the topics of the meetings will be negotiating a new arrangement.
Negotiations with the IMF mission should last two weeks, and if they are successfully completed, we would close the arrangement by the end of June, Dinkic underlined, noting that medium-term measures of economic and fiscal policy of Serbia will also be discussed during the talks.
Dinkic said that the goal this year is to stop the growth of public debt and reduce it next year, and explained that Serbia does not need IMF funds either for the budget or for currency reserves, but for credibility.
He also expressed the hope that the government will adopt at the next session a proposal by the Ministry of Finance and Economy on premature repayment of $430 million of external debt.
