Miroljub Labus
Opening a poverty reduction conference in Plandiste, which marked the official launch of the implementation of the strategy, Labus said this project calls for economic development, higher employment, poverty prevention, and social protection for the most vulnerable.
According to him, around 800,000 people in Serbia live below the poverty line of 4,970 dinars a month per household member. To cut that number to 400,000 in five years, Serbia must achieve economic growth of 4-5 percent a year, launch new businesses, and boost employment.
Labus noted that employment in Serbia was in a steady decline between 1999 and 2003, adding that this trend was stopped last year, when employment recorded a mild increase.
