The Serbian government adopted at today's session the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which is the basic framework for formulating goals and implementing measures in the field of prevention, treatment and support to persons infected with HIV/AIDS, as well as for raising public awareness of specific problems related to this infection. The national strategy covers the next five years, to 2010, the Ministry of Health stated.
In order to define an efficient social response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the government formed a multisectoral body - the Commission for the Fight Against HIV/AIDS. One of its primary tasks was the preparation of the National Strategy. In the upcoming period, the Commission will monitor implementation of the recommendations contained in the strategy.
According to latest data from the UNAIDS and the World Health Organisation, there are 39.4 million people infected with HIV in the world. Women and girls are increasingly vulnerable to this infection and therefore the risk of transmitting the infection from mother to child is also increasing.
The National Strategy envisages introduction of voluntary testing of pregnant women for HIV, further development of the Counselling Service for voluntary testing for HIV, creation of preconditions for treatment of patients in isolation wards of clinics, strengthening of the role of health centres in providing medical services to patients, improving the system of collection and analyses of HIV related data, the establishment of efficient preventive programmes and development of the institutional framework for successful coordination of planned activities.
