Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Trade, Forestry and Water Management Milos Milovanovic stated today that Serbia got the licence from the European Commission for export of potatoes to the EU market after 12 years of ban.
Milovanovic told Beta news agency that this decision was made by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Consumer Protection as potato ring rot, caused by bacteria Clavibacter, has been eradicated.
The licence of export to the EU market entails unlimited export of potatoes in terms of time and quantity to the market of approximately 500 million consumers.
This will be a positive stimulus to the development of vegetable production, but also to the overall development of local agriculture, he said.
The Assistant Minister expressed confidence that Serbian producers will be able to produce potato that by price and quality is competitive at the EU market, and recalled that the present export of potatoes from Serbia is well below potentials.
Serbia will continue to control the production and sale of potatoes so as not to jeopardise the export licence, said Milovanovic, adding that the control system that was established was evaluated as credible.
