Speaking at this event, which gathers representatives of 33 Serbian and 11 Russian firms, Laganin said that last year the exports of furniture to Russia increased by 50%, which is largely the result of the Free Trade Agreement, adding that Russia is the third biggest importer of the furniture made in Serbia.
In 2011, a free trade surplus of over €88 million in the sector of furniture and joinery was recorded.
He explained that the increased interest of both countries for cooperation in the furniture sector is a result of the signing of a new protocol between the Serbian and Russian governments in July last year on exemptions from the free trade regime and rules on determining the country of origin of goods.
He said that this protocol has enabled Serbian companies to become more competitive on the Russian market, and their products cheaper in comparison with products from other countries.
He recalled that last year SIEPA organised the participation of Serbian companies at one of the most important furniture fairs, "Mebel" in Moscow.
The SIEPA Director pointed out that nine Serbian companies participated at the fair and that they evaluated the prospective exports to around €10 million, and announced that this year there will be 14 companies from Serbia participating at the fair in Moscow.
The two-day Russian-Serbian business meeting in the furniture sector has been organised by SIEPA in cooperation with an association of furniture companies from northwest Russia.
The Russian clients who participate in this event specialise in the import, distribution and sale of furniture through their trade chains, and in furnishing hotels and other facilities in Russia.
