The Ministry of Defence says in a statement that Sutanovac acquainted Lidington with Serbia’s defence system reforms and the process to introduce a professional army, recalling that these efforts were highly praised in the European Commission’s report on Serbia’s EU candidacy, published on 12 October.
Lidington reaffirmed Britain’s strong support to Serbia’s European aspirations and the acquisition of candidate status, stressing the importance of fulfilling the clearly defined conditions for this process.
Sutanovac and Lidington agreed that the main significance of this process is to attain European standards and values, especially in circumstances of increased scepticism towards further EU enlargement.
The British Minister particularly welcomed Serbia’s inclusion in the EU’s joint security and defence politics and the sending of Serbian officers to the Atalanta mission as a contribution to the general process of Serbia’s EU integration, the statement adds.
