Intensive efforts under way to contain, extinguish 35 active wildfires

The Ministry of the Interior announced today that 35 wildfires are currently active across Serbia and that intensive efforts are under way to contain and extinguish them.

The most challenging situation remains in Deliblato Sands, where, thanks to the efforts of firefighter-rescuers and aerial firefighting resources, there have so far been no destroyed buildings or fatalities, and all settlements in the area have been protected from the fire.

A wildfire is also active on Mt. Stolovi, near Kraljevo, where it has affected approximately 200 hectares. Firefighting operations are being hampered by extremely inaccessible and hazardous terrain. No buildings or lives are currently at risk in the area.

In the Lukovo area, near Vranje, the wildfire has affected approximately 1,000 hectares of grassland, low vegetation and forest, and firefighting efforts are ongoing.

A wildfire is also active on Mt. Goč, where approximately six hectares of pine forest have been affected.

Following the activation of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, helicopters and crews from the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia have joined firefighting operations in Deliblato Sands.

Ground forces are also deployed there, including 69 Romanian firefighter-rescuers with 15 vehicles and 56 German firefighter-rescuers with 24 vehicles.

A Russian Federation Ilyushin IL-76 firefighting aircraft has also been deployed in the firefighting operation.
