The new line is worth €35 million, it is fully export-oriented and it will require taking on 40 new workers. With the opening of this production facility Ball Packaging will double its output to 1.5 billion cans a year.
Ciric recalled that Ball Packaging’s Belgrade factory was the first greenfield investment in Serbia since the beginning of transition and that during the crisis, this company was one of the first to enter a re-investment process.
This investment is important as it took place in the time of an economic crisis, when many companies were downsizing their staff and withdrawing from foreign markets, the Minister observed.
He voiced his expectation that Ball Packaging will keep investing in future, adding that this is a good example showing that the Serbian economy should be founded on investment in production capacities as this enables an increase of the added value, aimed at increasing the inflow of foreign currencies and reducing our foreign trade deficit.
Dulic stressed that investments of a multinational company, such as Ball Packaging, in a time of crisis show that Serbia has made progress and created a good investment climate.
We want other factories to make similar decisions because Serbia is a country of hard-working people with good knowledge who easily adapt to new technologies, the Minister observed.
Director of Ball Packaging Belgrade David Banjai said that Serbian administration has been forthcoming on many occasions, facilitating the functioning of the factory, one of the examples being the simplification of the customs procedure.
President of Ball Packaging Europe Gerrit Heske explained that their decision to re-invest in Serbia was influenced by the market and close links to clients, as well as the favourable investment climate and people who work here.
Can market in Europe is growing fast and over the last ten years, the production volume jumped by more than 60%, Heske said.
We have extremely large expectations when it comes to developing the south-east European market and that is why we are here, Heske stated, adding that 80% of their production in Serbia is intended for the EU and surrounding countries.
US Ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick and German Ambassador Wolfram Maas also attended the opening of the new line.
Representatives of the government, Ball Packaging and the diplomatic corps symbolically planted several tree seedlings within company grounds which will grow together with the company in Serbia.
