Speaking at the session held at the House of the Serbian parliament, Tadic stated that the members of NAM are again in Belgrade where everything statrted 50 years ago and thanked Egypt, as the chair country of the movement, for having accepted the initiative to hold this session in the capital of Serbia.
The presence of delegations of more than 100 states at the celebration of the 50th anniversary should not be seen as a reflection of nostalgia, but as a lasting commitment to the policy of non-alignment.
Fifty years ago, the President of Serbia recalled, the world statesmen came to Belgrade seeing themselves as the embodiment of the conscience of the mankind at the time, rejecting any notion of dividing the world into two confronted blocks, colonial domination and economic exploitation.
These countries accounted for the majority of the mankind and a declaration that represented an alternative and a third path was adopted then, the Serbian President said.
The results of more than 50 years of work of NAM have contributed to development of the mankind, but we must not forget that the world has changed dramatically since 1961, Tadic pointed out.
No multilateral body has advocated harmony more, or worked more on introducing a fair order in the international community.
In this room, fathers, the founders of NAM designed a new type of international relations that respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the states, a collective system of security and peaceful coexistence, Tadic said.
Serbia is not a member of NAM, but our feelings of solidarity have not diminished and we are proud to be a part of those who helped make the world free of colonial domination, stated Tadic, who expressed his satisfaction with the fact that all countries that emerged from the break-up of Yugoslavia are attending this event.
Tadic pointed out that at the entrance to the parliament building there is a bronze plate that reminds of the first summit of NAM and which reads: "Confident of the power that peace, justice and progress bring, we hereby establish the policy of the non-alignment by giving the mankind a global vision, which gives hope for the future.
