In a statement the Ministry of Health said that Stankovic, who is attending the 64th
session of the World Health Assembly from 16 to 24 May in Geneva, had a bilateral meeting with Head of the General Secretariat of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Haik Nikogosian.
Stankovic said that Serbia has become a leader in activities to control the harmful effects of tobacco smoke.
Nikogosian accepted an invitation from Stankovic to visit Belgrade in November, on the first anniversary of the entry into force of the Law on protection of the population from the exposure to tobacco smoke.
Stankovic also met with Regional Director of WHO Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab and discussed major areas of cooperation.
They discussed Stankovic’s participation in the newly established Ministerial board for environment and health policymaking, which consists of four health ministers and four ministers of environment.
The meeting also discussed activities of Serbia to improve the health of the Roma and the successful cooperation with WHO in this area.
World Health Assembly this year will discuss the following topics: child health, child injury and violence, cholera, chronic diseases, health systems, manpower in health, HIV/AIDS, immunisation, malaria, maternity and health and the Millennium Development Goals.
The Serbian Ministry of Health in collaboration with the WHO will in November organise a conference dedicated to the health of the Roma in Southeast Europe.
