Minister of Energy and Mining Petar Skundric confirmed that the completion of arrangements with Chinese partner CMEC is underway in a move to vitally reconstruct two thermo-blocks and construct a new power plant in Kostolac, in which about $2 billion will be invested.

Marking Miners’ Day, Skundric said that this would be one of the largest investments in the Serbian economy, stressing that the power plants and pits in Kostolac are one of the major energy capacities in Serbia.
He highlighted that all foreign and domestic investors are welcome to invest in the Serbian energy sector.
The goal of negotiations with the Chinese partner is to provide soft loans to revitalise and expand the capacity of Kostolac to 12 million tonnes of coal a year, and to build a new unit with a power possible of exceeding 300 MW, outlined Skundric.

The Minister congratulated the miners in Kostolac on record high production last year and in the first six months of 2010.
In conditions of economic crisis the miners showed that good and organised production can bring good economic and financial results and profit, he pointed out.
Kostolac recorded the highest production results in 2009 – the mines produced 34,427,558 cubic metres of overburden and 8,599,784 tonnes of coal.
Kostolac also produced 5.8975 million megawatt hours of electricity, he stated.
The Minister with a delegation of miners laid a wreath at the Memorial to miners in Stari Kostolac.

The Memorial in Stari Kostolac is located at the entrance to cave 2 which opened in 1872 and was active until 1950.
The opening of this mining pit marked the beginning of industrialisation in Serbia.
