According to a statement issued by the Ministry, EFTA is a market of 13 million consumers and Serbia’s trade with EFTA countries has grown steadily since 2005.
Serbia’s exports to EFTA in 2008 reached €77.5 million, the highest during the past four years, while exports to EFTA during the first nine months of this year stood at €55.4 million.
EFTA was established in 1960 with the Stockholm Convention and the founding parties of the Convention were Austria, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and Great Britain, later joined by Iceland and Finland. Later most of these countries left EFTA after joining the EU and today it has four members, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
EFTA has concluded 18 free trade agreements with various countries up until now and the agreement with Serbia will come into force on April 1, 2010, after Serbia and EFTA ratify it.
