Speaking at the first regional conference "Efficient policy of competition protection for higher competitiveness", held at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, Milosavljevic pointed out that Serbia was awarded the highest grade in the progress it has made in the field of competition protection in this year's report of the European Commission.
The Minister said that the most important new aspect introduced by the new Law on competition protection is that the Commission for Protection of Competition has broader powers in imposing penalties, since the threat of sanctions has a greater preventive effect than the amount of penalty.
Head of the European Commission Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert said that market competition is a precondition for Serbia's EU membership and that Serbia must gradually adjust its regulations and prepare for the application of EU rules of competition.
Degert said that full implementation of the Law on protection of competition secures the most favourable prices, the best quality and the greatest choice for consumers.
He recalled that the SAA and the transitional trade agreement include provisions determining the policy of competition in the market and welcomed Serbia’s progress in this area over the past year.
The gathering was organised by the Ministry of Trade and Services, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, with the support of the EU-funded Technical Assistance to the Commission for the Protection of Competition (ACPC).
