Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac, elaborating on the National Security Strategy and the National Defence Strategy, said that they are strategic documents, crucial to the defence and security domain, adding that their basic goals are to protect the vital interests of the state and its citizens.
Sutanovac recalled that the unilaterally and illegally proclaimed Kosovo independence is Serbia’s current key threat to security, adding that the fundamental concepts of the Safety Strategy are sovereignty and territorial integrity, economic prosperity, social stability and a foreign policy oriented towards Europe.
He said that this document focuses on the development of democracy and the rule of law, respect for human and minority rights and improvement of cooperation with both the most influential subjects in the international community and other states in the region.
The Minister reiterated that membership of European and other structures is a confirmation of Serbia’s political maturity, stressing that active participation in international organisations is in the state’s national interest.
Sutanovac noted that the Defence Strategy lists the preservation of sovereignty, independence, territorial unity and citizens’ safety as vital interests in the defence remit.
MPs will also discuss bills on the civil service, medals and decorations and engagement of the Serbian Army and other defence forces in multinational operations outside Serbia’s borders.
The bill on the Military Security Agency and the Military Intelligence Agency has also been added to the agenda of the first session.
At the
session held on September 24 the government passed this bill, whose adoption will complete the legal and normative regulations when it comes to reforms of the defence system.
The bill is fully harmonised with contemporary security and intelligence requirements important to Serbia’s defence and it fully acknowledges demands for the efficiency of military services.
