Speaking at an oath taking ceremony for soldiers at the First Training Centre in Sombor, Sutanovac said that since the possibility of doing obligatory military service in a civilian capacity was introduced, this year for the first time the Army could not accept all the applications to serve as military personnel.
Congratulating young soldiers, their families and friends at the oath taking ceremony, the Minister stressed that the Defence Ministry and the Serbian Army have for the first time received applications from young people who want to do their obligatory military service as soldiers.
He congratulated all those who have helped return people’s confidence in the military profession and restored the image and reputation of the Army.
He said that this shows that the military reforms are going ahead in the right direction, adding that reforms are being implemented to increase the efficiency of the Army, to make the people safer and to help make Serbia a prosperous country.
He stressed that the Serbian Army has shown that it is capable of fulfilling its three main tasks – national defence, participation in peace operations and aiding civilians in emergency situations.
The Minister said that recently the Army held a military-medical exercise in Nis which demonstrated that the entire defence system is able to efficiently meet the needs of the people in the case of any disaster, adding that the recent international air show in Batajnica also reflected the fact that the Serbian Army is playing a vital role in regional stability.
Sutanovac reiterated that there is a great deal of interest among young people for joining the Military School at the Military Academy which has become one of the most prestigious military educational institutions in the country.
He said that the Defence Ministry and the Serbian Army have shown that they are making major contributions to advancing the country’s overall level of international cooperation, including progress in the sphere of economy, adding that the Serbian arms industry with its growing exports is helping the economy in these very difficult times.
Oath taking ceremonies for soldiers were held also at training centres in Krusevac, Pancevo, Jakovo, Zajecar, Leskovac and Valjevo.
The oath taking ceremony in Sombor was also attended by Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant Colonel General Miloje Miletic.
This was the first time that women soldiers, aspiring to a professional military career, took oath at the same ceremony with the soldiers.
