Serbian Minister of Finance Diana Dragutinovic said today that the pre-registration of nearly 400 vehicles with commercial number plates and nearly 41,000 vehicles with Montenegrin number plates has raised revenues of RSD 1.7 billion.
In a statement to Tanjug news agency, Dragutinovic said that the deadline for vehicle pre-registration expires today.
She said that she hopes that all vehicles with Montenegrin number plates will be pre-registered within the deadline, adding that owners of vehicles with number plates from neighbouring countries have the option of returning their cars to the country where they were purchased.
She said that the justice and interior ministries will be responsible for dealing with those who fail to pre-register within the deadline.
The pre-registration of vehicles with foreign or commercial number plates began on April 21 after a decision by the Serbian government which makes pre-registration mandatory and according to which Serbian citizens have to pay 18% VAT as well as a 10% customs duty for cars from EU countries and 12.5% for cars from other countries.
According to Finance Ministry statistics there were more than 40,000 cars with Montenegrin number plates and 1,500 with commercial number plates in Serbia at the time that the government made its decision.
