Dinkic addressed the national conference on employment by saying that Serbia recorded a slight decline in the employment rate at the beginning of the year, which can be compensated for in the second half of the year.
At the end of 2008, the unemployment rate stood at 14.7%, he said.
Contracts employing new employees subsidised by the state will be signed next week, he said and added that companies have so far applied for 5,500 subsidised jobs.
Dinkic said that the state will subsidise 10,000 jobs, while Vojvodina will set aside further subsidies for 5,000 jobs.
He voiced his expectation that as part of the programme the first several thousand young people will start work in June.
He said that at the next session the government is to adopt a decision on public works which will employ 8,500 people thanks to funds from the budget, adding that together with Vojvodina, this should amount to 10,000 people.
Head of the European Commission delegation to Serbia Josep Lloveras said that the high unemployment rate is one of the greatest setbacks of the Serbian economy, which shows that Serbia is not using its workforce potential properly.
Lloveras said that the EU is helping Serbia to stimulate employment through labour market reforms, adding that Serbia’s new employment action plan for 2009 is based on the EU’s latest recommendations, which means Serbia followed in the Union’s footsteps when setting goals in this sector.
The National Employment Conference was organized as part of the EU project of support to Serbia’s employment policy.
