According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Economy, Dinkic and Kerry talked about anti-recession measures, particularly regarding infrastructure projects which can create a large number of jobs in times of crisis. It was jointly stated at the meeting that these projects must be given priority.
Kerry informed Dinkic about the US government’s plans for modernizing railway infrastructure by building high speed rail systems in five states.
It was stressed at the meeting that even though Serbia and the US have differences over the Kosovo issue, it is in the interest of the two countries to find common ground.
Kerry expressed his willingness to help Serbia join the World Trade Organisation.
They also talked about economic measures which Obama’s administration is undertaking.
Dinkic said that Kerry is one of the initiators of the idea to help Eastern European countries mitigate the impact of the economic crisis, adding that it is thanks to his initiative that the IMF received considerable additional funds from the 20 most developed countries, which includes the funds which Serbia received.
Kerry, who is the author of a portion of the economic programme drafted by Obama’s administration and chairman of the US Senate Committee for SMEs, voiced his hope that Serbia will be one of the countries that will more easily overcome the impact of the global crisis and become a factor for stability in the region, which is the joint goal of both Serbia and the USA.
The collocutors agreed that the global recession will be over only when the large banks which caused the crisis are revived and recapitalised, as well as that state programmes of fiscal stimuli can ease the crisis, but not stop it.
Dinkic left Washington for Boston, where he will meet with several large IT and biotechnology companies in the state of Massachusetts that are interested in investing in Serbia, afterwards he will hold a lecture at Harvard University regarding the impact of the global crisis on Southeast European countries, adds the statement.
