Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Miroljub Labus and US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Marc Grossman met in Belgrade today to discuss the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, stressing that the latest wave of violence in the province has harmed not only Serbia's economy, but also political stability in the region.
Grossman, who visited Pristina yesterday, called for putting in place resolute measures to ensure that all perpetrators and masterminds of the recent violence are punished.
The US Undersecretary of State said that UNMIK head Harri Holkeri will unveil a plan for Kosovo standards implementation next week, adding that repair work on damaged Serb houses, monasteries and churches will start shortly.
Labus and Grossman agreed that the return of Serbs and other non-Albanians calls for new political solutions that would ensure safety for all Kosovo residents. The US Undersecretary of State added that the international community is ready to cooperate with the Serbian government, which he said should take an active role in finding a solution to the problems in the province.
The two officials also discussed territorial autonomy and decentralisation as a possible solution to the problems in Kosovo-Metohija.
Noting that the recent violence in the province has harmed not only Serbia's economy, but also political stability in the region, Grossman said that the US is interested in the Balkan market and ready to help further economic development in the region.
